Eight people joined me to discuss "Reading More and Better" on August 8th. You can view the Zoom recording here and access the folder of shared materials here. That folder also contains the text of the chatroom from the Zoom, which contains several links to books and websites.
We all agreed that students do need coaxing to read more and read better. Many strategies were discussed, including several formats to help students organize their thinking about what they read. We also discussed having student transform what they read to demonstrate their understanding. This ranged from a college teacher's assignment asking students to take research articles and turn them into New York Timed user-friendly to a high school teacher's suggestion to turn articles or sections from textbooks into appealing formats such as graphic novel panels or cartoons.
ChemChats will continue throughout the 2026-27 school year. They are usually the 2nd Thursday of each month and run from 4-5 pm eastern time. Here are the fall dates and the topics for the next two 'chats. See "Events" to register. You can request a topic by emailing me at sklemmer@mac.com.
