Biology ✼ Chemistry ✼ Physics ✼ Middle School Science
July 8-19, 8am-4pm M-F, Needham High School, Needham, MA
Early registration through April 30th: $850 ($950 beginning May 1st)
67.5 PDPs, plus optional 3 graduate credits for additional fee

Modeling Instruction organizes curriculum around a small number of scientific models to make the content coherent for students, and applies structured inquiry so that students learn science by doing science and working like scientists. Teacher participants experience the modeling cycle in both student mode and teacher mode by:

  • Constructing knowledge from data & observations
  • Working collaboratively
  • Engaging in academic discourse
  • Developing, refining & deploying scientific models
  • Revealing, evaluating & discarding misconceptions

Centering instruction on scientific models supports:

  • 2016 Massachusetts STE Frameworks
  • NGSS science and engineering practices
  • College Board science practices
  • 21st century skills
  • Mathematical skills
  • Reading and writing skills
  • Student-centered instruction
  • Standards-based instruction and assessment

Past workshop attendees have said:

  • “This has been a transformational experience.”
  • “This is the best workshop I have ever attended.”
  • “Thank you for sharing such a student-centered method for teaching.”
  • “You have encouraged me to teach from the heart and stress inquiry-based learning.”
