2018 MITS Professional Development Seminar Series

2018 MITS Professional Development Seminar Series

Spend Valentine's Day with the Museum Institute for Teaching Science (MITS) for the 2018 MITS Professional Development Seminar Series – full day workshops that cover both scientific content and inquiry-based pedagogy. Seminars are designed for staff and volunteers from science, environmental, history, technology, art and other cultural institutions and centers in New England. Teachers are also welcome. All sessions promise to provide hands-on, minds-on professional development opportunities.

Sharing Science: Connecting Scientists and Engineers with the Public

Attend the upcoming session on Wednesday, February 14th and come away with ideas for fostering one-on-one interactions between science/engineering professionals and the visitor/school programs at your own institution to inspire a public full of curious, confident and enthusiastic science learners. Hear about The Discovery Museum's Science & Engineering Communication Fellowship program, part of the national Portal to the Public network, which was designed to help research scientists learn how to communicate their research effectively to the public and create activities to engage learners with their research. In this seminar, participants will engage in sample professional development activities used by museum staff with fellowship participants, and learn about some of the unique and successful programs developed by the Fellows across a range of disciplines – from neuroscience to condensed matter physics.

The morning presenter, Dr. Lindsay Mehrmanesh, will share the activity she developed as a participant in the Discovery Museum's program, and illustrate how you might bring the work of research scientists into your institutions. A molecular biologist, Dr. Mehrmanesh will use models and an engaging "super-taster" activity to showcase her research with DNA.
